Teddy bear has been around for over a century and it owes its name to the 26th president of the united stated Theodore “Teddy” Roosevelt, in 1902 Roosevelt went on a bear hunting trip to settle a border dispute between Mississippi and Louisiana, he did not shoot any bear that day but he saw a wounded young bear and he asked for that bear to be put down humanely so it does not suffer.
The event was publicised by the cartoonist Clifford k Berryman who was working for the Washington post, he drew a cartoon showing Roosevelt and a bear cub sitting on the ground side by side. The whole story gradually with the help of the media gained popularity worldwide and Teddy bear was born .
No one knows for sure when exactly was the first toy bear made, but the first official Teddy bear has seen the light in a small novelty store in Brooklyn, New York owned by Morris Mitchom, his wife Rose was making stuffed bears and Mitchom thought off calling them Teddy bears in reference to the Roosevelt Bear hunting experience, of course Mitchom asked Roosevelt if he could use the Teddy bear name and the president said yes.
Mitchom and his associates the Butler Brothers started the manufacture in mass of the Teddy bear and others followed bringing new ideas and new materials that kept improving over the years.
